CS2 Chicken Egg and Feed: When It Hatches and What the Guides Get Wrong

The first CS2 chickens have hatched, yet guides still quote conflicting numbers. Here is what is confirmed, what players report and what nobody knows yet about the egg, the feed and the life stages.

CS2 Chicken Egg and Feed: When It Hatches and What the Guides Get Wrong

The first eggs from the Rush Hour update were supposed to hatch after about a week, and since 27 September players have been posting reports on Reddit of a chick actually showing up in their main menu. The same reports exposed a problem: guides written in the first days after the patch quote different numbers, and some of those numbers have no source at all. Valve did not describe the pets in the patch notes. Chickens appear there only once, and those are the ordinary map chickens, which can now take damage from the Zeus x27. This piece collects what can be checked in one place and separates it from hearsay. The story of how the pets arrived is in our earlier article.

How to get the egg

The egg drops in the weekly Care Package, which is available only to Prime accounts. Players report that it shows up as one of the options after your first rank-up of the week. It is not a guaranteed reward: some people do not see it at all, and Valve has not explained whether every account gets one or whether it is rolling out in waves. If you pick the egg, it takes both reward slots, so that week you get nothing else. It does not go into your Steam inventory, so it cannot be sold or traded, and an account can have one pet at a time. While you hold an egg, chick or hen, you will not be offered a second egg.

The egg sits in a basket next to your agent in the main menu. Hover over it to see its status, or open the inspect view to look at it up close. Be wary of offers to buy eggs or "rare chickens" on Discord and third-party sites: pets are not in the inventory, so such offers cannot be real.

When the egg hatches

The hatch date is set the moment you claim the egg and falls roughly seven days later according to the guides, though some players got their chick after five. According to CS2Central and CSDelta, you will find the exact date on the cover of the HatchBook, the pet album (it is called the Pet Book in the game files). Reports about the countdown differ, though: some players see a timer in the menu, others only a message that the egg will hatch soon. It is also unknown whether the week counts in real time or in play time. Critfeed flags this explicitly as unconfirmed.

The first hatches came sooner than the guides suggested: threads about hatched eggs appeared on Reddit on 27 and 28 September, and one of them on r/cs2 is titled "Chicken egg finally Hatched. It took 5 days to hatch". Eggs from the first days after the update therefore hatched after about five days, not seven. Other players still quote a week, so the spread is real. The hatch has its own presentation, with an animation and sound similar to a case opening: the egg shakes, cracks, and you get a chick. One source mentions two different hatch animations. The speed-up through XP, playing matches or relaunching the game that circulates online has no confirmation, and CS2Central states flatly that it does not work. The sensible assumption is one week from claiming, with no way to shorten it.

Several guides also repeat that an egg whose feed runs out never hatches, and that an egg which is never hatched expires on its own, with a separate notification. This is second-hand knowledge, since there is no official description. So if you have little feed on the account in hatch week, plan the next package before the bowl is empty.

Feed: how much you need and what happens when it runs out

Feed is a separate item from the weekly package and, like the egg, takes both reward picks. CSDelta and Dexerto describe three reward variants: a 4 lb bag, an 8 lb bag, or two 8 lb bags. Every pet has a food expiry date and a separate date for its next growth stage, and the game warns you twice before the supply runs out: first a low-supply message, then a message that it needs feeding. One guide says the first message appears nine days before it is gone.

That is where the known facts end. Nobody has published how many days one bag lasts, whether needs change with the pet's age, or how much feed the egg needs. All reports agree on one thing: when the food runs out, the pet leaves for good. An adult hen also leaves when its lifespan ends, even if it is fed, and the game has separate messages for "lived a full life" and "ran out of food". When a pet leaves, its slot frees up and you can get an egg again, while the photos stay in the HatchBook.

Life stages, breeds and colours

The pet goes through egg, chick, pullet and adult hen. Every egg hatches into the same yellow chick. Breed and colour only show up at the pullet stage. You cannot choose, and Valve has not published odds for specific variants, so the rarity tables in guides are estimates. The game stores its own colour seed for each bird, so two chickens with the same colour name can look a little different.

How long each stage lasts is the biggest sore spot. A set of numbers circulates online: chick 22 days, pullet 28 days, hen about 90 days and departure around 140 days after hatching. CS2Central admits it could not tie them to any source, and the timers are supposed to live server-side, so they are not in the client files. Treat the numbers as a rough guide and base decisions on the date shown in the game.

The number of variants is quoted inconsistently as well: 34 or 35 in the first reports, 40 at CS2Central and 42 at CSDelta. In the last case, the yellow chick is added to the 41 adult colours (Catalana 15, Silkie 13, Polish 13). The differences come from later file analyses that picked up extra materials.

The photo booth, the HatchBook and chickens in matches

For some players the photo booth is the main reason to take an egg at all. You can name the chick, pet it and look it over, and the name can be changed at every stage. The HatchBook has three chapters, one each for chick, pullet and hen, and photos from the booth land in a library from which you drag them into the album. There are poses, actions, filters, several aspect ratios and about ten accessories, including helmets, hats, glasses, an alien head, a banana and a sprout.

The chick is too young to go to maps with you. From the pullet or adult stage (sources differ on this detail) the pet is meant to accompany its owner with the owner's nickname above it. The game files describe this on official servers, while CSDelta mentions a hosted lobby and solo queue. The files also mention the chicken being killed by a Molotov, a Zeus or a planted C4. Nobody has confirmed it live yet, so do not assume you will see a chicken in a match right after hatching.

What to do before picking from the package

The simplest plan: if you want a pet, take the egg in a week when you need nothing special from the package, because you give up the whole pair of rewards. Claim it and check the HatchBook cover for the hatch date. In later packages take feed before the low-supply warning shows up, and do not lean on the day counts from guides.

If you play mainly for cases and skins, the maths runs the other way: every week with feed instead of a case is a real loss of drops, and nobody knows how many such weeks a pet needs. One week spent on the egg is a fair experiment, but committing to many more on the basis of undocumented numbers would be premature.

Pets in CS2 are mostly a test of patience with incomplete information right now. We know how to get the egg, that it hatches after five to seven days and that feed is required. We do not know how much feed is needed or how long each stage lasts. Most numbers in guides from a few days ago are repeats of the same unconfirmed set.

Is the egg worth taking? If you treat the weekly package as a bonus, the cost of one week is low and the photo booth with the HatchBook is real fun. If you count every case, wait for more reports from people who already have a fed chick and can see the exact date their supply ends in the game.

We will come back to this once the first chickens reach the pullet stage and it is possible to check what the game actually shows, not what the next guide writes into its table. Until then, read every figure on a pet's lifespan as a guess.
