The Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 tournament at the 2026 Esports World Cup just kicked off in Paris, with a $1.8 million prize pool and 16 teams from around the world. The group stage runs through August 7, and playoffs take place August 8-9 at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. It's more than just another stop on the calendar, though: FaZe Clan and OpTic Gaming are meeting again only days after FaZe beat OpTic Texas in the CoD Champs 2026 grand final, denying them a third straight championship.

A rematch days after the Las Vegas final

This storyline started at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, where FaZe Vegas beat OpTic Texas 5-2 in the CoD Champs 2026 grand final, taking home $800,000 out of a $2 million prize pool. For OpTic, it was a painful loss: the team was defending back-to-back titles and chasing a historic three-peat, only to fall to the FaZe lineup of Simp, Drazah, Abuzah, and 04. For FaZe, it was their first championship since Black Ops Cold War in 2021, back when the org was still based in Atlanta.

Now both organizations arrive in Paris in very different moods: FaZe as the freshly crowned world champion, OpTic still looking to bounce back, and doing it only days after the most painful loss of their season. The Esports World Cup doesn't count toward Call of Duty League standings, but for both teams it's the fastest chance to reset the narrative before the rest of the year plays out.

Format: two groups, less room for a slip-up

The 16 teams are split into two eight-team groups using the GSL format, where every group-stage match is played best-of-five. The top four teams from each group advance to an eight-team single-elimination playoff bracket. Upper and lower bracket pairings in the playoffs are drawn between teams from opposite groups, which limits how early the same teams can run into each other again. Most playoff matches are played best-of-seven, while the grand final, which decides the Esports World Cup title, goes to best-of-nine.

Who else is in the mix

Beyond FaZe and OpTic, Team Falcons, Gentle Mates, and 100 Thieves round out the list of favorites, with G2 Esports, Cloud9, Team Heretics, Boston Breach, Carolina Royal Ravens, Vancouver Surge, and Movistar KOI filling out the rest of the field. It's essentially the entire top tier of world Call of Duty in one place: nearly every organization on that list played for a medal at CoD Champs this year, so no spot in the playoff bracket is a given.

Gentle Mates, the organization founded by French content creators including Gotaga, will draw particular attention from the home crowd, since their matches in Paris are effectively played on their own turf. For the European scene as a whole, it's also a shot at payback against the American rosters that have dominated the closing stretches of recent CDL seasons.

CS2 and Call of Duty at the same event

Black Ops 7 is one of 25 disciplines at this year's Esports World Cup, which relocated entirely to Paris because of the situation in Riyadh. A CS2 tournament with a $2 million prize pool kicked off in the same city just days earlier, meaning that for most of August, Paris is hosting top-level competition in both of the world's biggest esports shooters at once. For organizers, it's a test of whether one location and one stretch of the calendar can carry parallel tournaments without the two competing for the same audience's attention.
